    What is telehealth?

    PH&W defines telehealth as the use of telecommunications technologies, often Internet-based to provide health care. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), telehealth services may be provided through audio, text messaging, or video communication technology, including videoconferencing software.

    What types of services can be delivered via telehealth?

    The same services that are provided in a face-to-face session can be offered via telehealth.

    Your provider ensures that every interaction between our patients occurs within the patient portal which offers additional security. We use HIPAA compliance software and hardware tools that adhere to security best practices and applicable legal standards for the purposes of protecting your privacy and ensuring that records of your health care services are not lost or damaged.

    Will my provider prescribe medication using telehealth?

    Yes, subject to state and federal guidelines.

    What are the benefits of providing service via telehealth?

    Benefits include but not limited to:

    • Convenience: we deliver health services virtually, or mobile to your home or work. You receive services in a fashion that may be more convenient and less prone to delays than in-person meetings.
    • Flexibility: offer non-standard appointment times such as evenings and weekends which provides more access to see your provider.

    What are the risks of providing service via telehealth?

    Risks include but not limited to:

    • Privacy: using telehealth may introduce risks to your privacy and may reduce your service provider’s ability to directly intervene in crises or emergencies. Your provider follows security best practices and legal standards in order to protect your health care information, but you will also need to participate in maintaining your own security and privacy.
    • Connectivity: Computer or smartphone hardware internet connections and cloud services could cease working or become too unstable to use during your appointment. We will do our best to have a plan in place to address these issues.

    You will need a broadband internet connection and a computer with a microphone and a built-in or external web camera.

    When we begin accepting insurance, most carriers do cover telehealth services. Your contracted rates remain the same for services delivered via telehealth and face-to-face. Since we are using a fee-for service model, most often we are considered an out of network provider. You can pay for services using your FSA or HSA card or seek to be reimbursed by your insurance company. We strongly encourage you to contact your insurance company for further details.

    What can I do to make my visit go smoothly?

    You will need access to certain technological services and tools such as Internet service to engage in your session

    • You will need a broadband internet connection and a computer with a microphone and a built-in or external web camera
    • Cell phone with data or Wi-Fi connection and a camera
    • You must be in a well-lit area with the camera positioned so that you and the provider can see each other.
    • You will be responsible for creating a safe and confidential space during sessions.
    • You should develop a plan for backup communications in case of technology failures.
