Breaking the Silence: Mental Health in the Black Community

Mental health is an essential part of overall wellness. Yet in many Black communities, conversations about mental health have historically been shaped by stigma, cultural expectations, and limited access to culturally responsive care (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2023; Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2022).

During Black History Month, we honor resilience while also acknowledging the real barriers many face when seeking help — from historical mistrust of healthcare systems to a shortage of providers who reflect the communities they serve.

Healing happens when care is culturally responsive. That means providers who listen without judgment, who understand the role of faith, family, and community, and who treat each person as a whole human being.

If you have hesitated to seek mental health care, know that there is no shame in asking for support. You deserve to be heard.
