Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
Teen relationships play a major role in emotional development, identity formation, and self-esteem. While many teen relationships are healthy and supportive, others involve patterns of control, manipulation, or abuse that can seriously impact mental health (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023).
Teen dating violence can include physical, emotional, sexual, or digital abuse. Many teens do not recognize these patterns as abuse, especially when intense emotions are involved. Parents, caregivers, and educators play a critical role in helping teens identify warning signs and seek support.
Warning signs may include:
- Constant texting or monitoring of activities
- Jealousy framed as love
- Isolation from friends and family
- Pressure to share passwords or location
- Verbal put-downs or threats
If you are concerned about a teen in your life, lead with curiosity and care rather than judgment. Open conversations and connecting with a therapist trained in adolescent care can be life-changing.
